Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

« Back to Glossary Index« Back to Previous Page

Definition: Natural gas that has been cooled to approximately -162°C (-260°F) to convert it into a liquid state, reducing its volume for ease of storage and transportation.

Key Components:

  • Liquefaction Process: Cooling natural gas to condense it into liquid form.
  • Cryogenic Storage Tanks: Specialized insulated containers designed to store LNG at low temperatures.
  • LNG Carriers: Ships equipped with cryogenic tanks to transport LNG across oceans.
  • Regasification Facilities: Installations where LNG is warmed and converted back into its gaseous state for distribution and use.

Use Cases/Industries:

  • Energy Supply: Supplying natural gas to regions without pipeline infrastructure.
  • Transportation Fuel: Used as a cleaner alternative fuel for ships, trucks, and buses.
  • Industrial Applications: Providing energy for industries requiring high-temperature processes.

Advantages:

  • Efficient Transportation: LNG occupies about 1/600th of the volume of natural gas in its gaseous state, making it economical for long-distance transport.
  • Energy Security: Diversifies energy sources and supply routes, enhancing energy security for importing countries.
  • Environmental Benefits: Burns cleaner than coal and oil, producing fewer emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.

Challenges:

  • High Infrastructure Costs: Requires significant investment in liquefaction plants, specialized ships, and regasification terminals.
  • Safety Concerns: LNG is flammable, and its handling requires stringent safety measures to prevent accidents.
  • Methane Emissions: Potential leaks during production, transportation, and regasification can release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Related Terms:

  • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Natural gas stored at high pressure, used primarily as a fuel for vehicles.
  • Regasification Terminal: Facility where LNG is converted back to its gaseous form for distribution.
  • Liquefaction Plant: Facility where natural gas is cooled and liquefied for storage or transport.

Example: Qatar is one of the world’s leading exporters of LNG, supplying natural gas to countries across Asia and Europe via specialized LNG carriers.
